The right side of the receiver is marked 'MADE IN FINLAND' and the left side of the receiver is marked 'SAKO', 'Riihimaki', the serial number and two proofmarks. Mounted on a multi-point checkered walnut pistol grip stock with sling swivels, checkered plastic grip cap, raised cheekpiece and serrated plastic buttplate. Sako serial # are a disaster. In my experience a pre-72 (pre-Garcia) Finnbear, which is what I believe you are looking at, will have as stated a 3rd lug at the rear of the bolt, a higher polished blue, generally a lighter stock (your hand can easily encircle the pistol grip) and a lighter barrel (roughly.600' vs.650' at muzzle) and a fixed sling mount, no swivel and most likely have a.
Hi all. I am new user to this forum who found it doing a search for Sako Rifles.
I own a Sako Forester (L579, serial number: 19780), .243 cal.
I have been having difficulty finding information on my rifle on the internet and thought some of you could help me. I thank you in advance.
I believe my Sako is pre-Garcia due to no markings on the gun for Garcia. I also believe it is a Custom Deluxe because there is an oak leaf on the bottom of the grip. The stock is a beautiful light wood with hand checkering on the forward and rear grips. The ammo release plate is etched with what looks to be an antelope with leafy vine surrounding it. The trigger guard has the leafy vine etched on the bottom of it. The barrel is marked 'Bofors Steel' on the right side.
This gun was used by me as a young boy for hunting whitetail....so there are some scratches on the barrel and light scratches on the stock. (I know, why would my dad allow a 12 year old to use such a beautiful gun?) I would estimate the rifle to be at 90%.
So to my questions:
1. Is there anyway to find out what year this gun was built?
2. If I had the gun re-blued and the stock polished would it take away from the value of the gun?
3. With the scratches, would anyone know approximately what the rifle is worth?
4. Did Sako hand etch the serial number of the rifle into the bolt handle or did someone else do that at a later time?
Any info given about this rifle would be most appreciated. I thank you in advance for your time.

My grandfather gave me an incredible gift yesterday. He handed me a Sako in .338 win mag with Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14-40. Gun has never been fired. I have searched everywhere to determine the actual model and cannot. I believe it to be a Sako 75 deluxe but it does not quite match any pics I have found. It looks exactly like the Sako 75 Custom Big game deluxe minus the front sight, but all else looks exact. According to Sako that gun is only available in 416. If any of you guys can help I will try to provide some info that may help. Serial number is 9369xx. The only markings on the barrel are Sako V and Imported by Stoeger. It has 2 cross bolts and a bear head engraved in the floor plate and engravings on the trigger guard. Hopefully some pics will work. Thanks in advance for any information. Can't wait to shoot this gem. User since 7/15/05
Well my pics are bitmap images so I cannot load them. I will see if I can do something later.
Here are a couple pics of the .416 which my gun seems identical.

Thanks Grandview! I have never seen a pic of a model 75 Deluxe that had 2 cross bolts. I suppose with the magnum calibers they added those. I swear I looked at every gun auction site I could find for a pic. Thanks for lookn'.

Sounds like you have a Model 75 Deluxe. User since 1/9/03
The .338 Win Mag was made on their 'V', or magnum action.
Other calibers on that same action were 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 375 H&H Mag, and 416 Rem Mag.
With the possible exception of the .416......these magnums could be ordered without open sights. The link is to a 75 Deluxe in that configuration.

I have 2 Sako rifles, one from 1966 & a newer model 75, both are 243. That sounds like a great rifle you have. The recoil may be a little stout with full power loads. User since 10/14/01
If you have to you can track down some forums that specialize more in Sako rifles. I'd take the barreled acion out of the stock & make sure all is clean & add a light coat of oil. Other than that I don't have much more.
